RESIDENTS SENDS SOS TO GOVERNMENT
By Ofie Chukwuka, Ika Weekly

Tuesday, 02.02.2010, 10:09pm (GMT+1)

Residents of Dr. White Street in Orogodo, Agbor in Ika South Local Government Area, has sent a SAVE OUR SOUL appeal to the Ika South and State governments for immediate help concerning the abandoned untarred portion of their street. According to some residents in the area, they have sent delegates to the state and local government without any meaningful result.

One of the landlords in the area who pleaded anonymity disclosed that they cannot fathom the reasons why the contractor abandoned the portion of the road. He said that the contract was initially meant to cover the road from Old Lagos/Asaba road to Benin/Asaba road, “we are at a lost on this issue, How can government award contract and the contractor refused to complete the job, yet government pays the contractor.”

Also, a woman who resides on the same street close to Benin/Asaba road told Ika Weekly that they are always at the mercy of flooding during the rainy season, saying that the bad portion of the street is impassable, “During the rainy season, the street is always over flooded, to the point that last year, a child returning from school was almost drowned.” She appealed to the government to mandate the contractor to complete the job by tarring the remaining portion of the street from Imudia Junction to the Benin/Asaba expressway.

A woman tenant residing on the street informed Ika Weekly that due to the bad portion of the uncompleted street, it is difficult for the various security agencies in Ika land to patrol the street. She also stated that from 6.00pm, residents close to the expressway are always in doors to prevent robbery attacks due to the quietness of the area, “we are always indoors from 6.00pm as a result of the nature of the street. The situation is really affecting us especially some of us who are into business like Beer Parlour, restaurants e.t.c. even churches in the area usually experience low attendance of members during evening services.

The residents therefore appealed to the government to mandate the contractor back to site to complete the job before the rainy season commences.
