Prof Sam Enwemeka Appointed University Distinguished Professor

It was jubilation here at Ikaworld.com newsroom when the email copy of the latest edition of the College of Health Sciences journal published by the University of Milwaukee, USA arrived with the news that the renowned Ika Professor Sam Enwemeka from Ihaikpen quarter in Ime-obi, Ika South LGA has been honored with the most prestigious title in his faculty.

CHS reports below:

Dean Chukuka S. Enwemeka, Ph.D., FACSM, has been appointed UWM Distinguished Professor, the most prestigious title that can be bestowed on a faculty member at UWM.  To date only 40 professors have been so honored since 1973.

Dean Enwemeka's appointment recognizes his outstanding accomplishments in and contributions to his field and UWM. He is the first faculty member in the College of Health Sciences to be designated a UWM Distinguished Professor.

Enwemeka joined UWM as tenured Professor and Dean of the College of Health Sciences in 2009. Before coming to UWM, he served as Professor and Dean, School of Health Professions, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) for over six years. Before that, he was professor and chair of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center from 1993 to 2003.

A World-Renowned Authority on Laser Phototherapy

Enwemeka is one of the world’s foremost authorities in the area of photo-engineering of tissue repair process with visible and near infrared light and lasers. He has authored more than 85 research papers, monographs and book chapters, and has presented more than 300 papers, seminars, symposia and workshops nationally and internationally.

Enwemeka has held faculty positions at the University of Miami (Fla.) School of Medicine and at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, respectively. He earned his Ph.D. in Pathokinesiology from New York University (NYU) and did his postdoctoral research training at NYU’s Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine.

A Recipient of National and International Awards

Enwemeka is the recipient of many national and international honors and awards, including the presidency of the World Association for Laser Therapy, chairmanship of the North American Association for Laser Therapy. He is a Fellow of both the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and is listed among Who’s Who in Science and Engineering 1991. He served as editor-in-chief of Laser Therapy, and is currently co-editor-in-chief of the international journal Photomedicine and Laser Surgery.

A Distinguished Researcher

As a distinguished researcher, Dr. Enwemeka has secured millions of dollars in external grant funding and served as Board Member and Chairperson of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Advisory Council on Medical Rehabilitation Research. In addition to being a very successful grant writer, he has served and continues to serve on grant review committees for agencies such as the NIH, the Office of Special Education, U.S. Department of Education, the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR), the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong and the Medical Research Council of South Africa.

Dr. Enwemeka’s academic career has taken him to thirty-nine countries and all but five of the 50 states, either as a visiting professor, invited presenter, keynote speaker, visiting scholar or as an invited guest of other universities.

UWM Chancellor Michael Lovell in his announcement said, “Congratulations on your outstanding accomplishment. This represents a fitting accolade to your distinguished career at UW-Milwaukee.”
