Wednesday, September 1, 2010 marked the beginning of this year's 122 days, typically made up of 30 days in September, 31 days in October, 30 days in November and 31 days of December respectively. Historically, "ber" months are fundamentally memorable but consequentially unpredictable. Interestingly, the safety of live and property of our people has awaken our consciousness to post this important message which is intended to remind everyone of the good and bad side of these (4) controversial and accident prone months of the year. The consequential side of these last four months of the year is the witnessing of more auto accidents, home/shop and factory fires, swimming pool/river drowning incidents as well as deadly illnesses. In this year's 'ber' time and days, our focus will be on "prevention" as a pro-active measure against the 122 days of ber month's unpredictability. In the light of this: FARMER: when you get busy clearing the bush for next farming season, please be conscious of the cutlass. PALM WINE TAPPER: when you look up the palm tree, please double check the climbing belt and be mindful of the days' weather. MARKET WOMAN/MAN: when you get real busy displaying, shading and conducting a sale of your wears, products or commodities, especially those of you along the busy highway, please be watchful of the speeding vehicles. OKADA RIDER: when you have only one thing in mind (how fast to make a round trip) please be careful and considerate of the life of your passenger and that of yours. PEDESTRIAN: when you hit the road, particularly the express road, stop and look left and right sides to ensure that no vehicle is in sight before crossing the road. If there is a foot or pedestrian bridge, please comply by using it. DRIVER: Are you a driver? the focus and heat is on you. when you drink, please do not drive a vehicle, especially with your family inside. Be at your best physically and psychologically by having enough sleep before embarking on a trip as a passenger vehicle driver. During the journey, when you pull over at Ore or Benin City to refuel, please do not over feed or drink alcohol simply because of driver's free meal ticket. TRADITIONAL RULER: Thank you for making peace, development and safety your watch word and paramount agenda in your clan. During these four "ber" months of 2010, please consider mandating your traditional chiefs and notable pastors to conduct prayers for peace and accident free (122) remaining days of 2010. POLITICIAN: My brothers, sisters and compatriots in politics, in this remaining four months of 2010, let your action speak louder than your voice. Deliver the democracy dividend and as you get busy with campaigns for next year, 2011 elections, please give your people the accounts of your stewardship first before asking for another shot or mandate at representing them. Because political activities often leads to violent encounters, you, the politician is hereby challenged to escue demonstrations and confrontations during the "ber" months of this year by matching action with your word or campaign promise. POLICE OFFICER: In these period of the year, many of us wants to make extra money to put food on the table for our families. My brother and friend police officer, during this "ber" months of 2010, if you are not on duty, please do not leave your house or police post to mount illegal road block or duty because when you are caught, the police establishment will fire you and I guess you know what it means to loose a job few months to christmas. Mounting illegal road block or illegal operation may cause you your life because motorists may not be willing to obey your flagging them down at such an unfamiliar spot and you can be crushed or be seriously injured. Please your daughter or son want to see you at home this christmas. Stay safe as you go about your lawful and official duty thereby helping to make this year's "ber" months peaceful and accident-free. If you happen to fall into other categories of Ika men and women that are not called to action here, this message is also for you. please embrace this "prevention call" and help create the awareness for a peaceful and accident-free "ber"months of 2010.
